Website Networks: Building Roads

When it comes to real estate, virtual or otherwise, the success of most ventures are reduced to three contributing factors: location, location, location. Cliché, but true, even in cyberspace, businesses thrive and die by the traffic patterns that take prospective customers by the front door.

On the World Wide Web, the roads and sidewalks that lead past an entrepreneur’s place of business are the links to the site from other sites.

The map makers and directory assitance providers (Search Engines & Directories) draw maps around the larger roads and trails first, with sites getting less links lower in importance.

The larger the roads (the more numerous the links), the better representation on the maps and in the directories. This means that the more sites you have pointing to your business, the better your location, as the roads that lead to your door are larger, allowing more traffic.

So whether you create your roads through links from other sites you control, or whether you build a network of friends and business partners who send traffic your way, the best way to help your customers find you is by improving your location.
